Torque refers to the rotational force that causes an object to spin or turn around an axis. This force is essential in systems that rely on rotational motion, such as engines, machinery, and tools, as it determines how much turning force is applied to achieve movement.

Torque Definition

In physics, torque is defined as the product of the force applied and the distance from the axis of rotation (called the lever arm or moment arm). Mathematically, torque (τ) is represented by the formula:

Torque is measured in units like Newton-meters (Nm) or pound-feet (lb-ft) and is directly influenced by both the magnitude of the force and its distance from the pivot point.

Torque Examples

1- Wrench and Bolt:

Applying force to the end of a wrench to turn a bolt generates torque around the bolt. The longer the wrench, the greater the torque produced with the same amount of force, making it easier to turn the bolt.

2- Car Engine:

In a car, the engine produces torque to turn the wheels. Higher torque helps in accelerating the vehicle and provides more power, which is beneficial for tasks like towing or moving uphill.

3- Bicycle Pedals:

When you press down on bicycle pedals, you create torque on the crankshaft. Greater force or a longer crank arm generates more torque, making pedaling more effective.

4- Door Hinge:

Pushing a door open near the handle applies torque around the door hinge. The farther you push from the hinge, the more torque you create, making it easier to swing the door open.

5- Seesaw (Teeter-Totter):

Each person on a seesaw generates torque around the central pivot. If one person is heavier or sits farther from the center, they create more torque, causing the seesaw to tilt in their favor.

These examples demonstrate how torque is applied in everyday situations and helps us control and generate rotational movement efficiently.
